For starters, if you're not doing 3D work then just about any 2D card
or on-mobo chip will work fine.

Don't blame me. I voted for Gore.

I'd like to do 3D animations. should have made that clear.

At least for the video card, I would also ask in groups which deal
with graphics/animation.

Board: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum or the Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP. Why? Because they
have the nForce 3 Ultra chipset. Neither Asus nor Abit makes a board based
on the nForce 3 Ultra chipset. These are the only two brands that I trust
that make one.

AMD CPU: The fastest you can afford.

Graphics card: I'm out of my league here. If it's regular graphics cards,
I'd say an nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra, but maybe an ATi FireGL or 3DLabs
Wildcat might be better for 3D rendering for an application like Lightwave,
or whatever. You really need to ask what others are using. However, those
FireGL and Wildcat cards are VERY EXPENSIVE.
