how can i tell if my windows updates are downloaded and
installed bcos i cant see them anywhere whats the point
wasting time downloading them

Do you mean the Automatic Updates function? That one is (I think only for
Windows XP SP2) in Control Panel -> Automatic Updates. If it's set to
"Automatic", everything is downloaded and installed automatically. And you
can always check Windows Update to see if Automatic Updates received and
installed the most recent ones.

Hi

Have a look in Add/Remove Programs. You should the Hotfixes listed there. Also on the Windows Update page, click on 'View Installation History'.

If you consider downloading windows updates a waste of time then maybe you
shouldn't be running windows. If you want to be prompted for the
installation of those updates then just right click on My Computer and click
properties, under the Automatic Updates tab check the box that says
"download updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be
installed".
