The whole thing is a disgrace to our democracy. The CNN report is rather short, but is should be enough to get the gist of it. What is left out of the report is that minister Verdonk is also a member of the same party that Hirsi Ali is representing in parliament.
What is also left out is the fact that there is a current election ongoing within this party to elect the new leader, and Verdonk is one of the major candidates.
It all smells like dirty politics to me. Hah, perfect indeed
Don't forget the tulips, and lots of other cool stuf. Also couple of words in english have a dutch origin: school, s(c)hip, spook. There must be other examples not starting with an 's'.
Anyways, ask DH. He always refers to "the dutch are perfect", and who am I to disagree...
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world
And the seven seas--
Everybody's looking for something.
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused.

Somehow I always think about this song when the phraze "the Dutch are perfect" pops up.
Ten points of no use to anyone who guesses the Dutch meaning of these words. Well I believe they have a Dutch origin.
I could be wrong.
Well come to think of it I'm wrong most of the time. At least I have the courage to admit it.

Being Dutch, can I participate? Both are Dutch words with multiple meanings.
Meh... I recommend you use InterGlot.com. Has a pretty good translation unit from Dutch to English (free web application, no pop ups, one small unobtrusive ad per page).
The thing with the Hans Brinker storyis, it was written by an American citizen (Mary Mapes Dodge).
It was not part of Dutch folkore until we found out that there was money in it and then we made a stupid statue somewhere in the "polder" to satisfy American tourists.

Opportunistic money hungry Fookers [/jk]
If you think that's opportunistic money hungry, and if you are really bored one day, then read up on some history here about the Dutch West India Company (and if you really bored: the Dutch East India Company)
Who do you think put the slaves on American soil you might wonder? We, the Dutch, have pretty dark spots in our national heritage, but at that time (17th century) we were pretty much a world super power and I guess at some point that is what all super powers will realize when they review their history.
That's Dutch slang, but correct, however somewhat outdated. Nobody is using "Poot" anymore. "Pot" is still in use. InterGlot will not produce that though
