Can't afford a new notebook yet so I'm looking into ways to
upgrade my Presario 1700. I have upgrade the OS from
Windows ME to Windows XP latest edition. It has a few big
applications installed. Such as MS Office and Adobe graphic
softwares. It has 192MB RAM. The start-up takes about a
long time and I can hear it does lots swapping.

So I guess the RAM is the major bottleneck. Can experts
here tell me what RAM I should be buying for Presario 1700
and how much RAM Presario 1700 can take? Thanks.

From what I see it'll take up to 512 Meg but XP doesn't need to do
'swapping' on boot with 192 meg of RAM unless you have a gaggle of third
party apps loaded onto the thing and running.

Call up task manger and see what your commit charge is.

I rather suspect you're simply observing the effects of loading a much
larger OS with a relatively slow, by current standards, notebook hard drive.

A defrag might help.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:
