Secondary Domains

I've inherited an NT domain that i am planning on
upgrading to 2K3 in the next few weeks. My basic plan is
to upgrade my current PDC to 2K3, bring up the two new 2K3
DCs, move the roles, then take the old PDC down and be
done with it.

My problem is I don't want to inherit some of the issues
this domain has. In particular I have noticed there is an
old secondary domain account. One of the past admins set
up different domains for the different groups. Like Wisor
is our main domain, but there is also Wisoract(accounting)
and a few others. Where are these domains stored, and how
do I delete them? I'd like to clean this NT domain up
before upgrading and bringing that mess over to my new
servers.

Thanks for your help,
Mike Busch

Where are you seeing these 'secondary domains'? There is really no such
thing in a NT4 domain so what you are probably seeing is some machine on
your network that is set to the wrong domain and thus this shows up in the
browse list.??

Whenever I join a new machine to the domain, I get like 4
domains in the browse list. Local machine, wisor,
wisoract, etc. Are you saying there is a DC on my network
that is acting as it's own domain? I'm not saying that
isn't true cause there are a lot of app servers the
programmers use that I'm not 100% sure about. But where
would these extra domains be coming from?

And just for a little more info. When I go to my network
neighborhood I only see Wisor and Workgroup(one of our
printers default's to workgroup, no biggie). I don't see
a Wisoract there. But when I join a machine to the
domain. I restart, there is wisoract in the domain list.

That's where I'm having the issue.

This is probably coming from the Trusts you have in place. Have a look in
User Manager for any Trusts that are old and delete them.

Do you have Trusts set up with other domains? Check User Manager for
Domains, verify Trust Relationships with other domains.

Hope this helps!

Hey Scott,

I think you got it. I saw Wisoract in both trusted and
trusting domains. But under trusting domains I also
saw "universe". Is that a default setting that I should
leave alone? Or can I remove that as well?

Mike
