invalid domain name when make 2003 domain trusting NT domain

I have a 2003 domain (MP-DC) and one NT 4 domain (BP-PDC) location on different subnet connecting by router. on both NICs is NETBIOS over TCP/IP and lookup LMHOSTS. Both computers can ping each other either by name/IP address.

On MP-DC LMHOSTS I have:
192.168.10.2 mp2003dc #PRE #DOM:mp-dc #mp2003 is DC's name

On BP-PDC LMHOSTS I have
192.169.20.2 bpnt4pdc #PRE #DOM:bp-pdc

I use NBTSTAT -R and NBTSTAT -c everytime I modify the LMHOSTS files.


I have no problem when creating the trusted and trusting on the NT domain (BP-PDC). However, when I try to create new trust on MP-DC, I got invalid domain name, please select either realm / netbios name when I put down BP-PDC as the NT domain name. After I selection NTBIOS name and put down BP-PDC again and click next, I got trust cannot be established since domain cannot be contacted.


When I try to do a computer search BP-PDC on 2003 DC, it shows the NT pdc name (bpnt4pdc) but unknow on the folder column.

I have been doing research over the web but cannot find similar issue for two days. please help me.

Try adding the static 1b entry as well on the W2k3 DC. You
can copy and paste the following into your lmhosts file. If
you decide to retype make sure the \ is the 16th character in
the domain name, you'll need to add spaces after the domain
name to acheive this.

192.168.10.2 mp2003dc #PRE #DOM:mp-dc
192.168.10.2 "mp-dc \0x1B" #PRE
