Folks,
I know that several people have had problems with their iPAQs disconnecting
randomly when connected via USB. I had this problem on my XP Pro machine
with ActiveSync 3.7.1.
I recently updated the ROM in my iPAQ to version 1.10 (released Aug 2) and
the problem seems to have disappeared. I've been connected without a
disconnect for several days now. There may be a relationship, or I may just
be lucky. ;-)

Mauricio,
I guess I spoke too soon. Sometime during the weekend, the iPAQ
disconnected from the PC. I rebooted my PC Friday, so it was definitely
less than 72 hours.
Anyway, it is not fixed, but perhaps "improved" does describe it better.
Perhaps we'll see disconnects ever 2 to 5 days, rather than every day or
two, as I had been seeing before.

Paul, have you unchecked the option to allow the computer to turn the USB
port off to save power? You'll find this on your computer's Device
Management, Power Management tab on the USB HUB device.

What PC OS has this option? I am unable to find it on 98SE.

It's not an icon... It's a tab
Open device manager, find the Universal Serial Bus Controlers [+], and drill
down to USB Root Hub. You should see a tab Power Management. There's a
checkbox "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

Found USB Root Hub. Properties provided a Power tab. Power tab has one
button (other than OK or Cancel) titled "Power Properties". This button
provides a list of devices on the hub, one of which is my "Dell Axim USB
Sync". There are no checkboxes. Right clicking that item provides
nothing. No need in beating it to death. It ain't there. However,
thanks for the guidance.
