need help with a dumpster diving project

restoring a compaq 5133 desktop found in the trash without a cd-r
98M ram
win98se

put in a Verbatim branded cd burner 481648AX. It will read cds and cd rws;
but each of three burning programs [nero, cheetah and cd burner express] I
have tried say there is no cd-rw present.

W98's device manager says the cd drive is working properly and driver is
current.

any ideas or suggestions to get the burning proggies to see the hw
appreciated.

<snip>

is the softare you are using (such as nero) the full version...
or merely the software that came with some other cd-burner?
if it was "bundled" software it will generally only work with the specific
device it came with
