I have a single PDC and BDC NT domain controller network
(with 3 W2x member servers) and plan on upgrading the DC's
to W2K3 servers. I am told that an underscore in the
domain name presents problems, as the DNS naming
convention will create problems in name resolution. Is it
better (easier) to rename the domain while still an NT
domain or wait until the W2K3 upgrade is complete using a
domain renaming tool found with W2K3?

The underscore is not really a problem unless you use the underscore in the
Win2k3 domain when you run DCPROMO.
At this point if you are still an NT4 domain your domain name might be
domain_name, this is a NetBIOS name. After you upgrade to Win2k3 you will
not have a Wi2k3 Active Directory domain until you run DCPROMO. During
DCPROMO you will choose your AD name in two ways. One your NetBIOS domain
name, this will be the name you see in Network places; and your AD DNS name,
the DNS name you should not use an underscore and it must be a multi-label
domain name separated by a " . " like "domain.name". IF you fail to use a
multi-label name I can promise you many problems. I would also suggest you
put this name in the domain suffix field on the NT4 TCP/IP properties before
you upgrade, this will be your primary DNS suffix after you upgrade.
