Queries:
* will the display work better in sunlight???
* will the new touchpad suit in-flight use for glider/auto
navigation software???
* what H5xxx cables and accessories can be utilised???
* has the poor sound quality been addressed???
both for autorouting, and when used as a dictaphone . . .
* where is the microphone located??? Is it better when used as a
dictaphone . . .
I am attracted to:
* the 4" display (other iPaqs are 3.5" or 3.8" )
* the higher resolution (four fold is a big jump)
* `2003 Second Edition software (bug fixes and easier WiFi)
* landscape mode might suit some glider/auto space limitations
better?
* speaker on the front top-right (H5xxx have poor sound)
* faster processor (my H5550 is very sluggish at times recovering
from standby)
* CF and SD memory cards (as many good cameras use CF cards)
Any ideas/comments?? If anyone can get one into bright sunlight we
would love to know if there is a breakthrough in usability (big hope
I know . . .).
Current trade-in value for your h5550 is $175, from HP.

As with all displays, the more sunlight you put on it the less you
will see because it drowns out the display's backlight. (Glare, too)
But overall, the viewing on these small screens seems OK.

This will depend on how you are used to using it yourself

None, except MAYBE the USB cable, but I doubt it. the hx4700 is a
completely different animal.

I don't think so, the front speaker is smaller than your h5550.
compare the pictures. It does however, have a better equipped
equalizer built into Windows, now.

I suspect it is hidden somewhere at the top or in the side, since
I didn't see any other holes on the front (like the tiny speaker)

The screen might have a higher resolution, but you'll find that
the display area has not increased. the fonts and buttons are
simply bigger and better anti-aliased. (smoother, in other words.)
third-party programs such as Pocket Hack master can address this
by modifying a certain registry key to increase the display area.

See above

Sluggish reaction from your h5550 can be fixed with ScaryBear's
Check Notification program, which cleans up the Notification Database.
it's free to use, I have it and see no sluggishness when recovering
from soft resets or standby modes.

As much as the unit has a little technical attraction to me I will not
buy it, first because it's not available here in Europe yet, second
because in terms of RAM and expandability it is less capable than a h5550,
(which could use sleeves) and third because I simply don't feel like
dishing out another $750 to HP in 6 months time.
It only found 3 bad files, and about 40 duplicate notifications
(calendar items . .?). 71 items left now.
I am getting a 10 to 20 second delay each time it presents the list
of 'notes' (which is about 300 long). Before my last hard reset it
had grown to 30 to 40 seconds. Especially bad when an SD card is
present (not much on it).
Would love to fix it as the H5550 is perfectly snappy in other ways.

Ouch, 71 items.. I can only find 7 in my 5550's database at the moment
when it comes out of standby and at most 9 when I soft reset it.
You have the second utility that runs on startup (which is soft reset)
installed as well?

Mostly seem to be valid future appointments and reminders. I wonder
if they are causing the slow down . . but why would they (only)
effect the viewing of the list of Note names????

Not yet, I'm happy to do it manually to get a feel for when they
build up.
