For those who don't know it - there's currently an Around-the-World
race in progress.

Teams from AVSIM, FlightSim and SimOuthouse are racing, this year
east-bound, around the world. They started yesterday at noon EST in
Cairo which is also their destination.

The progress map is here:
http://www.smithplanet.com/rtw/racemap.jpg

RTW site is: http://mw0.ath.cx/%7Ematt/RTW/teams.htm
with links to all the race sites.

The current AVSIM race site is at
http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=227&topic_id=1052&mesg_id=1052&page=

Those boys have been flying all`night and probably will do it for 3 or
4 more nights.

Great job teams!!

Hi Tom Orle,

I'm tipping that Avsim will give the opposition another flogging, just
like the previous two races!

But hey, I've been wrong before! :)

Howdy John Ward,

Hey, I'm sure they will ;-))

I like their strategy of flying the relatively slow, default
historical planes early on in the race! Since the rules state that
each one of those planes has to be flown on at least one leg of the
race, so why not do it early before you wind up in a position of
trying to cross the Andes with a Piper J-3 Cub ;-(

I'm interested in seeing how they will tackle the Pacific and Atlantic
crossings with the new limitations in the rules this year.

Hi Tom,

I guess we all stay tuned, and see how the flogging unfolds... :)

You sound well up on the rules - were you involved in the previous
races?

John,

No - first time. As an observer.

I have yet to try my hand at online flying. Even though that's not a
requirement for participating in the race, it would make it a lot more
fun ;-)

There's even a leg or 2 reserved for the Concorde ;-)

Looks like the SOH team lost it's lead in miles and bonus points.
Right now they seem to be only flying fast military prop jobs - can't
wait till they have to fly the mandatory classics ;-(

John,

I believe the winners celebration will be held in the Grand Gallery of
the Cheops pyramid.

The 2 loosing teams get to have a picnic on the paws of the Sphinx.

Ha!

No, the 2 losing teams must live in Cairo for the next 10 years. :-(

Perk,

The rules are here:
<http://mw0.ath.cx/%7Ematt/RTW/rules.htm>

The racemap is here
<http://www.smithplanet.com/rtw/racemap.jpg>
where you can see FlightSim's victory.

The current AVSIM discussions are here
<http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=227&topic_id=1372&mesg_id=1372&page=>

But to make it short: they started in Cairo and had to fly around the
world, this year in an easterly direction.
Some reqirements: they had to touch 45° South and 60°North. They had
to fly 8 classic aircraft. No jets allowed except from specially
assigned airports. Props and turbo-props of no more than 2 engines
were the standard. Aleg could only be 2hrs long - anything over up to
3 hrs would incur a 3 fold penalty. Over 3 hrs, and the leg is
invalid.

5hr bonuses were awarded when they flew into specially assigned
airports. Several corridors could be used which bypassed the 2hr
limits and the Concorde could also be used.
Details in the site given above.

Hi Tom,

WOW! That's on the top of my list of places to visit one day, before it
gets ruined anymore.

That's bad luck for the guys from FlightSim and Sim Outhouse, but hey,
even coming last in a contest like this wouldn't be too bad1 :))

They sure did - but they obviously didn't want to follow the crowd ;-(

From what I read, apparently AVSIM had won the last 3 races. This is
the first time FlightSim go to take the baton thru the finish line
first. AVSIM was in the lead until they hit South America.
