hi ,
this has happened to me twice, so i am asking for some
input again.
1 Domain, 2 Controllers, 1 PDC , 1BDC
I unhooked the network cable from the BDC and restarted
it, logged on to the domain using account with admin
credentials, when i tried to go into USER manager or server
manager, it says Domain not available. No matter which view
i choose it does not show me any servers...My question is
how can i upgrade this to a PDC now.

Same thing happened last test scenario, in one sitaution i
did not restart the system and then upgraded it to PDC
which worked. But in actual production environment i want
to keep the offline taken BDC as backup DC in case my AD
upgrade fails for some reason.

Any input is appreciated.

I went to commmand prompt and tried usrstat /domain and it
shoes me all the user accounts, but nothing for the Server
manager side.

ThanKs

The message is normal because the BDC will attempt
to contact the PDC of the domain which holds the only
modifiable copy of the SAM database. When opening
server manager the BDC does not show up in the list?
What happens when you click on view and enable
show domain members only? Open a dos prompt and
run net users, do you see your domain accounts in the
list?

hi ,
I guess i answered all in my post itself. Here it is again.
Message i am aware of will show up, which is normal
behavior.
I am repointing no matter which view i choose ( domain
members, servers only , all and all possibel combination)
no server is showing up in the GUI.
On Commmand prompt using USRSTAT i could see all the
domain accounts. Yes they are coming up fine.

My question was why is this behavior is there any known
issues like these, and will it be any problem say down the
line if i wanna upgrade my this offline BDC back to PDC if
things does not work in production AD upgrade ?

Thanks

Not it is not normal. The show domain members
setting is supposed to pull the computer accounts
from the SAM database. If you open a dos prompt
and run show config server what is the value of the
hidden field? Also verify the server service is running.

Try stopping the netlogon service then in server manager
click on view / all and "show domain members only"..
