Jetway V266A - Help - Upgrading CPU.

Hi all. Banging my head against a wall here. Need some guidence.

I am trying to upgrade my Dads PC. Currently running an Athlon 1000,
with 256m SDRam (PC133). FSB set to 100Mhz with J4 link on. Board is
BOM V5, with latest Bios (v5?) for the V266A board. All running happy
untill...

I insert an Athlon XP 1800 CPU (working - "M" type @1.75v), replace the
memory with a 256Meg PC2100 DDR Ram and remove the J4 Jumper to set FSB
to 133Mhz. Have also changed the Ratio Jumpers. The PC will power up,
with fans ok, but will not load up Bios. It just hangs - no beeps or
anything.

I have tried with the existing 256m SDRam (PC133), but still hangs. I
understand you cannot run the SDRam and DDRam together - so only used
one at a time. Is there a jumper to select which type of memory is
default?

Everything is fine and stable with the old Athlon 1000 cpu.

Should the Athlon 1800XP run happily with PC133 SDRam memory, or does
it definitely have to be upgraded to PC2100 DDR?

Any ideas? Any other jumpers I need to set? Anything silly like having
to remove all the PCI boards and bios battery and rebuild it all again?

First step to try would be to unplug the power cord from the power supply,
find the CMOS jumper and set it to clear for about 15 sec. then back to
normal. Boot up and try to load fail-safe, then optimized defaults.

Motherboards supporting both SD and DDR ram do not support both being
installed at once .It’s one or the other.
I would be removing the ram and clearing the CMOS, by either using
the jumper or removing the battery.Usually the jumper is near the
battery and points out the options.If not sure then I would download a
manual for the motherboard from Jetway support.
Removing PCI devices that the system does not require to boot would
do no harm although I think starting with the CMOS is the obvious one

In theory the XP 1800 should work with either ram.
Did you remove the chip from a computer working without issues?

Try with PC133 memory first. Try safe settings or FSB100 first. You may
need to update BIOS for auto detection. Try setting Vcore manually. Do you
know CPU is OK?

IIRC replace that jumper and use the BIOS.I did a couple of builds
with these boards.They are ok but the manual and jumpers contradict
the BIOS e.g don't try to set the RAM speeds/CPU speeds using the
jumpers.IIRC if the jumpers are all on the BIOS becomes,"Auto-Detect"
and will set up ok.If not try combos of what I have suggested as it's
been a while.

Hi all. Thanks for your advice so far. The CPU I have given my dad is
from my own PC - which has been happy for many years (used for Video
editing). I upgraded to an Athlon XP 1900, and donated the 1800 to my
dad. The stick of PC2100 256 memory also came from my PC, after
considering that my dads PC133 memory might be too slow.

I agree that losing the power and re-seting the Bios may be the best
option - something I have not tried on every attempt. Setting the J4
jumper to run at FSB100 and making all ammendments in the Bios itself.

However will the Athlon XP1800 run if the board and Bios are running at
FSB100? Eg, prior to making the adjustments within the Bios menus after
reseting everything?

I need to get back to my dad with the various ideas you have given.
I`ll report back as soon as I have any news.

Hi.

That sounds strange. I have exactly the same model and BOM number as
you and I installed an AMD Athlon XP 2100 the other day. I forgot to
set the frequency to 133MHz. Surprisingly, the computer worked
absolutely fine, except that Windows XP reported the CPU as being an
AMD 1500 or something. So it should be okay either way. I don't know
whether the RAM's speed is an issue though. I've never tried this
processor with anything other than PC2100 RAM.

On the other hand, I recently bought an AMD Athlon XP 2100 and
installed it, and I had exactly the same problem you're having. It
was only later that I discovered that there's more than one version
of this CPU, and the version I installed isn't compatible with my BOM
version. You see, one CPU model has a "Palomino" core, and the other a
"Thoroughbred" core. So maybe that's the problem you're having.

If you want to find out, there is a CPU compatibility table on the
Jetway web site (www.jetway.com.tw). Just click where it says "CPU
Support" in the navigation window on the left. then select
"SocketA/SlotA", then you'll find the V266A board on the list. Then
you have to know the exact model number of the CPU you're trying to
install. It should be either "AX1800DMT3C", "AXDA1800DUT3C", or
"AXDA1800DLT3C". Only the first one is known to work with your BOM
version.
You'll find the model number either on a sticker on the die of the
CPU, or printed right on the core (the silver block in the middle).
