do trust relationships with other domains break, when you promote a new BDC
to PDC status in one of the domains that is part of the trust?

What if this happens in a domain that is trusted across our WAN, and depends
on WINS static entries for the former PDC/BDC's...

The trusts can be broken if the newly created PDC
doesn't have the same configuration as the original
PDC e.g., WINS or Lmhosts settings.
