IDE disk stuck?

My home built has been acting strangely ever since a crash about a month
ago. Now, when it boots, it scans the IDE disks forever, then gets to the
Windows start-up screen and sits there for 20 minutes. I have an Asus AV8
Deluxe 939 motherboard. There seems to be a heat problem, but the system has
run the way it is set up for well over a year without any problems. Any idea
son what's happening?

It sounds like you've got a corrupted Windows installation. You may have to
reformat and do a fresh install.

Run chkdsk on all drives.

I removed the SATA RAID and now it boots normally. So my new question is:
can a RAID controller go bad? Is there any way I can tell?

A controller going bad isn't nearly as common as the hard drive going bad.

Or, you may not have the RAID array setup properly.
