Land & Water Terrain Details?

I just got a new video card and I can see advanced "water effects" for the
first time. Quite the improvement over the dull, flat water I had before!
Anyway, as you all know, the slider for advanced water effects automatically
precludes one from selecting the terrain details for land and water (and
vice versa).
What are terrain details for land and water exactly?
