Hello. I just got my extra SD cards and a USB card reader so I am ready
(and able) to reformat some of my favorite DVDs to watch on my iPAQ. All I
am trying to do is get a good/decent version of the movies on 128 or 256 SD
cards. The only missing link is WHICH of the DVD converting software to use.
I understand a couple are free...are any of them good?
What are your recommendations? I plan to just use the Pocket Media Player
9, but if you have suggestions for viewers like Pocket TV, that would be
welcome.
Money is always an object, especially in today's economy, so if any FREE
solutions are good in your opinion, please let me know.

I've tried them all and can thoroughly recommend Pocket-DVD studio as the
best. costs a little more than others but it blew me away when I finally got
the settings how I wanted them and anyone I have shown is equally impressed
that a PPC can display movies so well.
Admitedly I mostly convert music videos and with full sound quality and
around 400kbps video they come out at between 15-20mb but I have a 1gb SD
card on my 4150 so not too worried
try the demo and play with the settings until you get a mix of size and
quality that you are happy with

Anthony-- for those of us with 128 and 256 SD cards, would this work for a
movie up to 2 hrs?? And, how can I find out your great settings? I have a
4355, so should be same settings as yours. Is the sound that good?
thanks for your recomendation. mark

ok well in the output settings I have for audio:
bit rate: 128KBits (CD quality)
Sampling: 44KHz
Channel: Joint Stereo
and for video
Frane rate: 24fps
Codec XviD MPEG-4 Codec
on the main screen there is
resolution: 320x176 (56k pixel)
and a slider for Movie Quality and Size where audio settings and frame rate
and resolution are what you have defined above so the slider controls the
video bitrate and I have it set between 300 and 400 generally depending on
what output size it estimates it will be just under the slider.
As I mentioned, with those settings I can do for example George Micahel fast
love video 5:10 in 20mb with fantastic quality
I found lowering the sound bitrate below 100 made it quite tinny and not
nice to listen to whereas you can drop the video bitrate to around 200 and
still get good quality and you are going to have to do that to fit a full
movie onto your memory
btw my second choice software would be DVD to PPC from
http://www.makayama.com which probably better suits trying to specifically
fit the video to a certain size memory card but I found it didn't have
enough settings for me to tweak and last time I checked it only supported
fitting movies to 128mb and 256mb. worth checking out though as it doesn't
do a bad job
my next worry is when I manage to get hold of the hx4700 with the VGA screen
how great will the videos look but how much bigger will they be :-)
