Hi, new to the board
I'm putting together a new system
Asus K8v se deluxe, Athlon 64 3700, 2 sticks 512, 430w Antec
I haven't looked into graphic cards for a while, as I'm a casual game player. But I run some 2d & 3d cad programs as well as Photoshop and illustration programs. I'm thinking a Geforce 6600 may do, or would I be better of with the fx series... say fx5700. The Radeon 9600Pro looks like a buy. The 6600GT is kinda pushing the limit of my price range right now so it may not be worth the $50 over a vanilla.
Any advice???

Stay in the 6000 series and you should be alright, natural go with the best possible card you can afford :) I would avoid the 5 series like the plague.

Hey Rx,
I Will definitely focus on the (6000)s . I've just seen a 6800xt lower priced than the 6600gt .
I have read the 6800xt is now the lowest priced of the (6800)s the 6800le will be discontinued.
Thanks for the advise

Do you have a timeframe you want the card by?

because the 6800XT is very new to the markets and i haven't read anything on them benchmark wise...but its a tossup between that and the 6600GT....frankly they should be very close in performance.

If you are a casual gamer maybe trying to find a used 6800GT would be a good option....BFG has a transferable lifetime warranty. Meaning if you buy one off ebay or something you will still have the lifetime coverage. So you are garenteed a card that works....maybe you could get one for around 200 if you are patient enough to wait.....

just a thought.

Stay the hell away from anything with "FX" in the title. They really do suck very badly.

Best bet is a 6800GS if you can find one. 6800GT performance for just above $225...

Your right Pixx,
I saw some marks that included both the 6600GT & 6800XT, and their scores are close to being tied on about all of the test.
I can't remember what site I got it from, If I can find the page again I'll post it here.

I just noticed this....you could get the A64 3200+ which would save you $80 you could put into getting a 6800GT.
I know you use CAD programs and stuff but the 3200+ is 2Ghz the 3700+ is 2.2Ghz and double the cache...it wouldn't go much slower.

Also link me to the ram you are getting, mobo, and power supply....i think i can find a better setup for cheaper to get you into a 6800GT....without lowering your cpu form a 3700+.....
Give me links to everything.
Thanx

That's what I'm now hearing Cleeve, and you 've just reaffirmed my decision on staying with the 6000 series.
Thanks for the advise.

cleave does have a point....3 days ago you could get the 6800GS for 199.99 shipped. and it performs exactly like a 6800GT.....
its alittle out of your price right now, but link me to evertying and i will make it work for the same amount of money.

Thanks pickxx...If had gotten on here sooner then, I could have done that, but I already have everything but the graphics card to have a completed system, so there is not allot left in the computer budget now.
