Built my last computer four years ago and its time to build a new one. Primarily will be a game machine as the old one will be a linux box.

dont need an optical drive or operating system. Any suggestions on what components to get?

Any suggestions
Do some research and propose a system for us to critique. It's a lot more fun and you learn a lot more about your rig. :D

my original thoughts before posting were

Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Computer Case (with 450w PS)

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor

ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive

ATI X800XT

+ whatever 2gig ram

Well its not the way i would go...
I would get a 3200+ and a better graphics card....it will make games run much faster.

for 309 you can get a 7800GT from newegg right now...its not a lot more then X800XT and it will double performance of it....just downgrade the cpu enough to cover the extra cost if you have a limited budget.

if you have the money for both the 7800GT and 3700+ you're golden

I was thinking of this for ram

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Platinum System Memory

Im not going to overclock it so OCZ might be too much

Not necessarily too much - just look at the performance series to save a few dollars. What games are you playing that require 2GB? Most modern games do not use that much...

I would say get 1GB of value RAM from OCZ, unles you play BF2 a lot.....

BF2 is just about the only game where 2GB helps enough to upgrade IMO, but i think that 1 GB of value RAM from OCZ (should be around 80-90bucks) should be perfect if you arn't going to OC.

Let me show you something interesting about the videocard. This system, for games, will run rings around almost every rig out there. I'm not sure about that motherboard or that RAM specifically but hopefully you get the idea.

Antec Case = $99
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice RETAIL - $152
OCZ Value Series 1GB PC 3200 - $80
Western Digital WD2000JD 200GB - $87
A8N -$110
GeForce 7800GTX - $460

Does it make you happy to copy me?

i hate BF2, everyone thinks they need 2GB of RAM....and everyone thinks a fast cpu and a medium gpu is better then a low CPU and a fast Gpu.

This makes me almost want to write a sticky for people....ALMOST i am just kinda lazy. maybe i will later this week....because this whole 2GB of RAM and 3700+ with a 6600GT shitt is killing me.
