I just inherited a '95 Subaru from my sister and the radio reception is terrible. Always scratchy and will fade in and out in really random places. Im used to our new car which doesnt have an external antennae but is solid when the radio is on.

Im a novice with cars so any advice to boost reception is welcome. Danka.

Check where the coax cable attaches to the base of the antenna; make sure it is not loose. Also inspect the coax all the way to the radio. If it looks crushed or damaged at all replace the antenna/coax assembly.

vehicle with that age especially in Minnesota , where i am from , can have funny little problems like this spurring from a connection that has some light corrosion . but if the car you are talking about doesn't actually have a body mounted antenna than you would probably want to get one if you can. the antenna's that were incorporated in to say the windshield didn't work that well to begin with. i have had a vehicle that i had this problem with and my solution was to get a universal antenna and put it in the rear deck of the car ,connect the cable and ground the base of the antenna to the car body . this worked ok but not perfect.
