After installing WinXP SP2 on a P3/550, when shutting down, it says "safe to power off" rather than automatically powering down.

Is there a motherboard jumper or bios settings that need to be set to enable auto power down?

This likely happened if your mobo's platform is AT. The latter format ATX allows Windows to shutdown computer automatically. Otherwise, your mobo might need BIOS update.

actually I'm sure the motherboard is ATX and supports auto powerdown, I just think something is not configured correctly, not sure if its a hardware or software setting... for starters, so motherboards have a jumper that needs to be connected to enable it?

solved, I had to check the "enable advanced power management support" checkbox under power management options, APM tab
