Seem to have 2 display drivers fighting for my settings

I have a new (for me) ATI 9600 SE.

I seem to have a conflict as to what is controlling my display settings. I have my ATI settings in Catalyst set for a bright monitor. When I boot up, it's nice and bright - but then it gets dark. If I open up Catalyst display settings again it resets to the correct display colors as soon as I click on the Color Management tab (without me needing to slide anything).

When I launch some games, it gets dark. I have to alt-tab out of the game, go back to display settings and, again, I hit that Color Management tab and the settings go back to light (like I want them).

I uninstalled my old NVIDIA drivers (from my old GPU), but it doesn't make a difference.

I think there might be a GPU function built into my motherboard or maybe the CPU that is trying to wrest control of the display settings from the ATI GPU.

Any help?

Motherboard: ASUS P4P800 + onboard soundcard
Intel PIV
ATI 9600 SE

Thanks
