Just purchased a new system (no time to build :( ). I want to upgrade the video card for some occasional game play (Rome Total War, Civ, and the like). My open slot is a PCI-16x.

My price point is between $120-160 US. I was planning on getting a 6600GT.

My question is: Should I wait a couple of weeks for the X1600's to come out? I could then perhaps get a 6600GT on the cheap or a 6800 or X1600 for around the price I'm looking at now.

Also, I've read that ATI drivers can be tempermental at times -- is this a valid concern?

Get a 6800GS for 199.99 i know its a little higher then you wanted but its a great card for the price

you could try to find the X800GTO^2....the little tiny "sqaured" 2 means that it will unlock VERY VERY easily and with 100% sucess rate to a X850XT....so for around $160 bucks you can have a card thats VERY VERY good.

i second pickxx... its a few bucks more but trust us, you will be glad. the 6800gs is much faster than the 6600gt and will last u longer and doesnt not cost much more. And that ATI if you know how to unlock and mess around with it is a great deal.

That said a 6600gt for $130 is a good card. And, the games you mentioned are all strategy based, which leads me to believe that you'd have plenty enough power to be happy with a 6600gt... but we here always like headroom :)

6600GT's aren't going to go down much (if at all), and they're great cards.

If you can afford it, the 6800GS is worth it for sure.

And if you play with alot of video, and are comfortable with overclocking, it might be worth it to wait for the cheaper X1600 PRO's.

Those X800GTO2's are friggin crazy powerful awesome, too, when unlocked.

You know, you really can't go wrong with any of them...
