NT4.0 Server Free Space Disappears

Free space in a separate partition for networked programs
has been tight, running approx 600-650 MB. Getting ready
to make a change mid June. Users are aware and we monitor
the server daily. Yesterday morning I checked and it was
at 628MB. Has been this way for about 2 months, then
suddenly late yesterday late afternoon programs would not
run. Checking the free space it was down to 6MB! Have
been cleaning up this afternoon and up to 180MB. Everybody
is back running OK. Any ideas on what might have
happened ?
