I am looking at either a 6800GS or a Connect3D X800GTO.
I know the Connect3D GTOs have a great success rate with unlocking the 4 pipes lines and have a great overclocking range (a mildly overclocked x800xt).
As of now Half Life 2 is my game of choice but I may be switching graphics cards when new games come out. I usually sell my graphics card within about a month or 2 so it doesn't loose to much value and upgrade to a better one. The 7800GT would probably be my next one.
But I wanted to be able to play HL2 at my max res (1366x7680) with AA and AF full. I'm just not sure if the 6800GS has any distinct advantages over the GTO other than SM3 and initially better clock speeds.
$180 for the GTO and $200 for the GS. BF2 might be another game I play as well as Oblivion: Elder Scrolls when it comes out, but I'll probably have a 7800GT by then. I was hoping on not spending much on new graphics cards so trying to get a 7800GT when it reached under $250 (which may be a while) and just selling the other one before it looses to much value. I don't see the GS going any lower than 200 for a little while and the GTO maybe going up.
I just wasn't sure how much difference there would be in a 7800GT and a 6800GS if I keep the res at 1366x768 on full AA and AF.

thats actually the question I am pondering right now myself.....both cards are great for the money....I think it really comes down to taking that chance if the gto will unlock or not.....the sucess rate on the connect3d gto is really good but you know how luck goes  ...

Performance wise the GS would probably win in most benches but they would be close (if the x800 was unlocked).

The 7800gt isnt a bad option but for 100 bucks more and not that big of a performance gap the GS would be my pick for now

Those are both good cards. I was considering getting the 6800 GS also at one point but then I found the x800GTO2. The Sapphire x800 GTO2 is a very great card for the price. It's easy to overclock and so far has a 100% chance of doing so. People who OC the card have never failed from what I hear and those who try have all gotten the card to OC to a x850 XT or PE. It's only $240 at Newegg so if your willing to spend a little more then you will a card that will last a lot longer than those other 2 since it can be overclocked to a high end card. The x850 PE is a 400$ card so this GTO2 is definatly the best bang for your buck. It's my #1 choice at the moment.

just the Connect3d I believe.

I think the GTO is better when it is overclocked and unlocked in almost all apps. But it is just the hassle of unlocking even though it has a very high percentage rate since most failures have been do to user error. I may just go with the GS.

okay, is the POWERCOLOR X800GTO unlockable too? cuz it's only 170$ with free shipping

ONLY THE X800GTO^2

THE 2, or the sqaured, PART IS THE MOST IMPPRTANT PART. IF theren't a 2 then you can't unlock pipes and do all that shizzle.

And its not a 'high percentage' its 100% serisouly i haven't found someone who failed because of the card....yeah a user can screw things up....but thats safe to say about anything.

They are indeed moddable, and user error has taken into account to most of the failures.

Well if you take into account user error....then nobody should build their own computers...lol. Its low risk, read first, then do.....like all things.
