I haven't been keeping up with the graphics card world lately. My current card is a Radeon 9700Pro which is almost 2 years old! Well, I just put together a new system and I need a PCI-E card now. I have an old ATI Mach64 PCI card in there now (yes, you read that right). I was going to keep that in there and wait until the holidays were over before I made a move on a new card. However, I am now looking at the world through 640 X 480 4 bit color! I can't take it! I'd like to get a 7800GTX 512 but $700 for a video card is just plain stupid. Is there anything out there (chipset/manufacturer) that overclocks nicely that can approach the performance 7800GTX 512 for a couple of hundred $$$ less? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Start at the x800xl (~$275) and work your budget up from there until you don't want to spend any more.

Not sure where you're from but 7800GTX's go for $450 around here.

Well for 700bucks you can get two 7800GT's and get better performance.....I personally hate SLI so i hate saying that but its an option.


Personally i would get a 7800GT, you can OC to beyond GTX (256) levels and be just short of 7800GTX 512 performance for about half the price.

With that 300bucks you just saved....i wan a 10% commission....but only on the money saved...so send me 30bucks. Thanx

That card should support at least 1024x768 at 16-bit color. You must be having driver issues or something odd, but the correct driver should be built into windows!

I think paying $700 for a video card is just nuts. I thought paying close to $300 for my Radeon 9700Pro was insane!

Since I posted this I've been reading up on things and have come to the same conclusion. Any particular brand you prefer? Does one OC better than the other? Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

Right now the Standard VGA drivers are what Windows installed. I searched for drivers online and as expected didn't find any for WinXP 64. I'll see if I can get Windows to install the proper drivers. If that doesn't work I'll try a different card. I have a whole box of these crappy old cards.

From everythign i know the 7800 Series cards are bascially all the same.....I like BFG for Nvidia personally.
