System hangs pre boot with slave drive attached

Hi,

I am at the end of my rope here. I have two hard drives, 1 80gig Maxtor (C drive) and a 120gig Western Digital (slave/storage). I formatted the master drive and installed winXP Pro with all the updates and whatnot.
Works fine.
However, it will NOT boot with the slave drive attached (which has lots of my data on it). I have quadruple checked the jumper settings, I have replaced the IDE cable. I have taken the slave drive out and tested it in another machine and it boots and finds the slave drive with no problem whatsoever.

When I boot my computer with the slave, it takes forever to get to and go thru the verifying DMI data part andthen goes to the windows XP professional logo and just stays there forever. I don't understand it. If I unplug the power of the slave drive and keep the IDE attached it boots up fine also, so I don't think its a problem with the IDE.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill

Machine in question:
AMD Athlon XP2800+
1.25 gig DDR333 RAM
Abit NF7-S (Nforce2) mptherboard
DVD-RW
CD-RW

With the jumpers there are 3 options

Master, slave, and Master WITH slave

I had this happen and i changed it to master, but not to master WITH slave

I know you checked, but you did this properly right?
