Why are thumbnails defaulting to generic thumbnail in windows 7?

What do you mean by "generic" thumbnails? You may want to check the folder options, to see if Windows 7 is actually generating thumbnails for your content.

Either that or you need to have opened the file/photo, etc... first. I've found that after opening a photo or pdf file, it will get rid of the generic pic and insert a thumbnail of the file in question. If that doesn't do the trick, try toggling the view slider to see if that gets the thumbnails to show.
