I currently have a custom system Athlon XP 2800+ overclocked to 2.4GHz on a Biostar M7NCD with 1GB of RAM and a Radeon 9200 128bit 128MB 8X AGP video card along with 2 old 7200RPM IDE Western Digital HD's a 40GB and a 60GB. This system is working fine for me I can play Doom3 in Med. Detail at 1024x768x32, and I don't do a whole lot of gaming so it works fine for most of my other tasks, but some new games may pc won't play supposedly (Quake4). I do some programming mostly in java, but sometimes when I have 4 IE's open & Media Player I can feel it crawl. I have been debating on upgrading to one of those new geforce 6100 boards and a Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Core with a Geforce 6600GT video card and one or two 200GB SATA HD's. I don't need a super fast machine and I am debating on a x2 but I don't want to fork out a lot of dough right now tax time is coming and I probably have to pay up this year. So what do you think upgrade now or wait? If I do will I see any dramatic improvements from it? I know I will in video what about CPU wise?

Wait. The biggest impact on gaming performance would be to upgrade your vid card. This Asus 6800 and a good OC will do you justice...

Not interested in gaming performance alone. I want all over system performance if I am going to get a decent gain from moving upto a Athlon 64 or not basically.

I don't think you're going to see a huge performance increase by switching to s939. With M2 right around the corner (Jun/Jul 06) I think it would be unwise to go s939 if you can put off the upgrade...

I don't think your slugish performace is due to your mobo/CPU. Is your PC adware/spyware/virus free? What kind of resources are left on the HDDs? Defrag recently? Checked system monitor to see what is eating your resources? 4 IEs open...are you sure the sluggishness isn't from your internet connection or malware? All the most recent drivers installed for your hardware? When was the last time you did a format/reinstall of windows?

It's not really sluggish I just tend to do a lot at once with it. I will be writing java with Netbeans and running several IE's and media player, etc. Yes it is spyware/adware free. I have a subscription to Spysweeper aswell as trendmicros PC-Cillin that has there somewhat scans for spyware scanner. Drivers are almost the most recent maybe a couple months out of date. That is mainly what I am looking for though if I should upgrade now or wait for the new stuff. I think this one will make it :D

yea im running similar system NOT oc'd just running standard xp2800+ @ 2.2ghz. This system is still excellent.

So a M2 will be a whole new socket? Rats! I was thinking a s939 would take the new chip because they all say they accomodate dual core, x2 or whatever.

Considering that the 939 will have had something like the A64 2800+ through the 5000 something it's not a bad run.

bump...
So M2 will be a whole new socket design. non s939 compatible?
Hum, since my P-4 is doing ok (3 years old) sounds like I should wait too.
Dang, I was hyped

Reply to Rustang351c

That is correct - M2 will be a new socket and will not support s939 cpus. M2 has extra pins to support DDR2. I just don't think the money you'll lay down will be worth the performance increase you will see. A good vid card would be a much better investment for you. It will hold you off until M2 is released and any bugs are fixed...JMHO
