sata power?

just wondering, when you convert a standard HD connector plug (i think it's molex, right?) does the missing 3.3v supply effect the sata hard drives and/or cause any performance loss, i'm supposing that the 3.3v is needed for somthing or the other, so what's it for exactly, and what will get affected if it's not there, or do the manufacturers have a neat way to get around it when 3.3v is not present?

My bet is, if it was, they probably wouldnt have been made in the first place.

I've actually seen POWER SUPPLIES with the 3.3v lead missing from the SATA connector. Today's drives don't use it, future drives might.
