So are those Maxtor 16MB 200GB SATA HDDs any good?

I was thinking bouts it because they were $87, but how much performance does that 16MB really add? I thought Maxtor was hit or miss but do any of you guys think its OK, since I have stuck with Seagate since the start of time.

They're good drives AFAIK, but from what I've seen 16mb cache only adds a couple % to burst rates in benchmarks, which translates to about 0.0001% of overall system performance improvement.

Maxtor used to suck. These days, all drives are about equal as far as quality is concerned. So, don't be concerned with manufacturer so much as what kind of warranty they offer. (1 year, 3 year, 5 year, etc). My WD Raptors have 5 year warranties- very good IMO. Find a drive with at least a 3 year warranty.

As for the 16MB cache- it doesn't do much in overall performance. RPM's is what really matters.

They are average, I have a couple of the older MaxLine II's and the III's are quieter. I only occasionaly hear the drive, the loudest thing in my rig is the CPU fan.
