I have just set up a Netgear PS111W print server at home so I can
print wirelessly from my 2 laptops to my HP Deskjet 840C (XP on both
machines). The prolem is that when I print from an appliction, the
application freezes until the printing has finished. When the printer
was directly connected, the printing just went on in the background
after it was queued and I could continue with the application.

Any clues as to what I am missing?

TIA

What OS? Drill down into the Printer control panel, there should be a
setting like "Spool print documents so program finishes printing
faster".
