I have a Brother MFC 3420C, it uses LC31 carts, when i refilled them,
the printer still thinks they are empty. how do i get the printer to
use a refilled cartridge?

You've got to make sure the second chamber is filled otherwise the printer
thinks the cartridge is empty.
How are you filling them? and how much ink are you able to get in to the
cartridge? they don't seem to hold very much and are hard to fill as if the
sponge is not very absorbent

Try to use black electric tape to cover the lower part
of the cartridge. Ink senser can be fooled.
Ink actually is hard to fill unless you can use negative
pressure vacuum fill method. However this is not
a simple way.
