I need a little advice (and more importantly, some assurance!). It all started two years ago when I was applying for college and had the choice of attending University of Ill. - UC, Uni. of Wisconsin - Madison, or Uni. of Minn - TC. At this time, I was stuck between what to major in (either business or comp. sci). Rationally, I should've initially chosen comp sci, since programming, and computers in general, have always been a passion of mine. The problem is, when you're 18, you don't always make the right decisions...I chose business and am currently attending UofMinn due to its reputation for a good business school. Over two years into the program (and internships, experience, etc.), I have concluded that business is NOT my cup of tea (I have really good grades, but the curriculum is ridiculously easy) and I just don't see myself being happy in it. Therefore, I plan on switching to computer science, as I've already taken some of the classes because I was planning on getting a minor in it and I love it. Herein lies the problem: had I made the correct decisions to begin with, I would probably be at the UofIll, which is much more reputable for its comp sci program than Minn is. However, switching universities is quite out of the question at this point...I'm stuck in an apartment lease, I'm in a wonderful relationship with a great girl, etc etc etc. All else aside, I really like the UofMinn as well. Now I've compared the curriculum from the UofMinn with that of UofIll and other well-recieved comp sci universities, and it seems they are nearly identical. On the other hand, though, the UofIll is consistently ranked in the top 10 for its comp sci program, whereas the UofMinn usually falls anywhere from 19th to 40th. My ultimate question is this (sorry this was so long-winded, I do appreciate your time, though!)--If I'm passionate (and good) at computer science, will it matter what university I attended? On a side note, how important are national rankings? It is my belief that you get out of your education what you put into it, regardless of where you attend (a good uni/ college is definitely a plus, though). Anyways, I'm just trying to look for a little assurance that I will be fine getting my comp sci education at the university I'm currently attending. I'm kicking myself in the butt right now for not making the right decision earlier, but hey, life's about making mistakes and learning from it. If I can find some assurance that my education at the UofMinn (combined with my motivation, interest, and talent in the subject matter) will take me just as far as an education from one of the other aforementioned universities, I will be able to rest easier at night! Thanks in advance for your responses, and I really appreciate your time on this post.

My experience is not in the computer field so take this with a grain of salt. Choosing a technical degree over a business degree is the difference between having someone tell you what to do rather than being the person who chooses what others do. Of course there are paths to staff/management from technical but in my experience if you are good at what you do in the technical field management likes to try to keep you there.

You've already got two years in business, and the curriculum is easy, so why not go for a double major or a minor in CS?

Try "External Degree" program . . . or such.

While you're at it: private schools generally have better academics than their public counterparts-- especially when it comes to undergrad where funding isn't so much an issue (ramble. . . ramble. . . ramble. . .)

Hey, at least your mistake wasn't going to UofI and smoking too much weed and drinking too much and getting thrown out after one year...

(wonder who could have done that....)

Honestly, you were right about getting out of it what you put in, and also that no one cares unless you are at the top of your class or it's a very specialized school...

#200 @ UofMinn or UofI or Community college, it don't matter...

Madison was #1 on Playboy's list of party schools!!! I was up there last weekend to visit a friend in the hospital, good scenage... Same @ UofI though....
