Sorry about what might appear to be a dumb question, but I'm in the midst of making plans for updating my computer hardware and have run into a small but very important question (the answer will affect the bill for the upgrades by $100 or so).

Is SATA backwards compatible? I've noted that the motherboard I'm planning on buying has ports for SATA II (3.0 GB/s). I have a SATA 1.5 GB/s hard disk. Will it work with these new ports, or do I have to buy a new hard drive that supports SATA II?
