USB device only detected when plugged into different port

I am using a USB2.0 video importing device. Once in a while, my computer will say it's not attached. Unplugging it and plugging it back in doesn't work.
However, when I plug it into a different USB port, it (sometimes) IS detected. And then the whole story repeats itself. Since I am getting kind of tired crawling under my desk to keep plugging this thing into other ports, I am wondering: any idea what's causing this, and more importantly, how to stop this?

  1. Sounds like 1 of 2 things: Software or hardware. (duh!)

Try removing and reinstalling the USB drivers and see if htat helps.

If not, try a different cable. Since you said it happens on any port, but erraticaly, (am I correct?) it's not that one port, so cable would be the next guess.
