Fixed-speed props - nightmare!

Hi all

Last night I tried the commercial pilot lesson 1, in the Baron. It was
a nightmare! I found it extremely difficult to control the plane with
the precision I'm able to control the Skyhawk. I found myself lagging
further and further behind in the lesson as Rod was telling me to make
climbs and descents whilst I was still trying to simply fly the thing level.

To make matters worse, the extra demands that using fixed-speed props
placed on me were hellish! Having to adjust engine RPM as well as
manifold pressure, to say nothing of opening and closing those cowl
flaps all the time, is bad news for me.

Tell me, is it /really/ worth all the hassle? At the moment I'm
thinking "gimme fixed-pitch props any time!"

Ha.. The sim imitates life very well. I recall my first complicated twin
in the sim... I really began to comprehend the concept of "get ahead of the
aircraft" because I was always "behind the aircraft". Things happen before
you are ready to deal with them. When you are behind your aircraft you have
the sickening feeling that you are not in control.

As time went by, I could handle the workload easily. - Just like real
life.

Since my original post, I've gotten to grips with the Baron and it's now
my favourite plane to fly (although I can't wait to get started on the
jets). However, I need to re-read the stuff about RPM and manifold
pressure, because right now I don't really get what that's all about.

Do me a favor... go here and buy this:
http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=421C-001

It will add a whole new dimension to your simulation... in fact it might
totally addict you to the simulator and your wife might divorce you...

Trust me on this.

Don't believe him!! He's going to screw you up completely.... ;-))))
No, honestly. The Flight1 C421 is very good however if you're still hassling
with the Baron it wouldn't be a good idea to go to the 421 right now as it
is THE high end piston twin. However the C421 is my favourite piston twin in
RL and in SIM and Flight1 did a real good job here.

Oooo, looks nice! I can see a few new toys in that cockpit too. What's
the screen below the GPS unit? And the green screen to the right of
that? And the CD player above that?

I can't quite make out the digits on the airspeed indicator (I thought
of saying speedometer here but I get the feeling it isn't right)...what
kind of cruise speed are we talking? After all that mucking about in
the Cessna, one thing I love about the Baron is the cruise speed of
200-220 KIAS.

Mind you - while we're on the subject of buying extensions to FS2004 - I
already had my eyes on the PSS Concorde. It's going to take ages before
I'm even flying a Learjet, let alone a 747 and all those other very fast
things, but the package looks stunning.

Oh, never mind about the cruise speed - I was so busy admiring the 421C
that I forgot to read the text on the page. :)

Aww... those two instruments are not modeled in that product... one would be
a weather radar which you could purchase as an add on from RealityXP. The
"CD player" is actually the transponder. The GPS is a partially complete
Garmin GNS530 GPS... it is still miles ahead of the FS9 GPS.

Yeah, they modeled the panel without compromises so the gauges are "actual
size". But, fret not.. they have click spots that pop them up to large or
digital read outs. After a while you can read them as they are.

This is actually a pretty old package as far as add ons go - (3.5 years?) -
but everyone will tell you it's a joy to fly and just a little masterpiece
that deserves a place in the Hall of Fame.

Oskar is right, you are speeding your sim career along rather rapidly but
you seem to catch on extremely fast. The prudent choice for your first
couple of months would be the Flight1 C172.

But who wants to be prudent? :)

Heh, you're right, it is a gorgeous plane isn't it?
Mmmm....temptation... :)

The weather radar sounds like a great idea. I want one!
