Global Flyer in FS2004

I downloaded the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer aircraft for FS2004. It seems
pretty cool. It was difficult to reach 40,000+ feet without stalling the
thing. I think I'll try and see how far east I can fly before I run out of
fuel, though I doubt I'll fly disciplined enough to complete the trip.
There is a built-in fuel efficiency gauge to help you determine how well
you're doing.

Here're a few screenshots:

Thats why Fossett needs up to 13 hours to reach this altitude :)

I've just posted this a few hours ago. I really like the model. Did you also
get the "fuel-patch"? It makes a fuel load of 18.000 lbs possible.

It took me 2:20 hrs to reach FL410, however it seems to be a bit high for
initial cruise. Climbing speed was 140 KIAS/M0.44, using 320 kgs of fuel to
reach FL410 (sorry, I'm thinking metric here ;-) )
Longitudinal oscillations started at FL370. After around 10 hrs flying time
I climbed to FL450 and stayed there for the remainder of the flight. Cruise
mach 0.48 for the first 40 hrs at FL450, thereafter M0.50 for the remainder
of the flight.

Maybe this FS2004 model is a bit too optimistic ;-) if you look at the
following values:

I took a routing of 22'000 NM crossing the Equator twice, the southernmost
point being Cairns/Australia.
I used the "old" fuel load of around 6500 kgs of fuel, landed after 72 hrs
with "real weather" enabled to have at least kind of a realistic tailwind
component and had roughly 800 kgs of fuel left. (that would have been
another 13 hrs at FL450)

If it were that easy..!!!!

I´m on it too )

Not knowing the real route, when i took off, I chose a 3 legs direct GPS.
1st
leg: Salina - Kuwait City 2nd leg: Kuwait city - Darvin Australia (You
need to
cross the Equator at least once, if you want to claim to have been around
the
world!). And the 3rd leg: Darvin - Salina.

Crossing the Scandinavians at night time, gave me a awesome lokking
aurora, nice
touch!! And over Ukraine i got the next surprice: All the clear sky you
could
wish for, and then whith out a warning, a blizard??? Made a update on the
weather, but after another 5 min., more snow from the clear sky?????

I´m still 1700 NM from Darwin, and making ready for the final leg, whith
50%
fuel left, so I think i might make it home ;o)
I´m traweling between FL390 and 450, to keep the wind behind me, and climb
rates
at no more than 100ft/min up and 200ft/min down, ajusting the speed
between
120 - 140Knts to keep the fuel los around or under 20 GAL/h.

I´m looking forward to the landing, and hoping that there will be just a
little
challenge there? Take off and flying has, so far, not been even close to
what i
expected / hoped for, or maybe i should try keeping awake for 3 days whith
only
milkshakes at hand?
The plane i as steady as a rock, unless there is a sudden change in wind
direction, then it´s a rolercoaster ride for a few minutes.

If the sim version is any where close to the real thing, i dont see the
challenge, but i do miss one thing: some light on the panels in the 3D
cocpit,
it´s getting pretty dark in there at night time :eek:/

I've never been in a real aircraft, so i actual don't know, what the
challenge was.
But i suppose, the challenge was to stay awake for ~70 hours. Besides, the
take-off
with 18.000 lbs of fuel, was probable very hard. The Virgin Global Flyer is
very sensitive to
turbulences, especially with full tanks. The difference between the sim and
the real
flight? Shitted pants!

Well, found the challenge in the end ;o)

The lighter the plane gets, the more work it needs to keep it steady, but
hey it
gives more miles per gallon )

And the final, five minutes to midnight FS time (1 AM real time): Should
have
tryed out a few daytime landings, before atempting one in total darknes,
limited
visability and a hard wind comming in from the left (
It´s pretty hard to get that thing to stay down, once it have made contact
whit
the tarmat. Maybe I should try putting glue on the tyres?

Think the ATC got a little tired after my second attempt, he started to
line up
the rest of the trafic behind me "Just follow the eksperimental down wind"
( Year he wont stop at the runway anny way!! *G*

Tommy, who made it at last, and wil try the real route next week!

Did you deploy the parachutes? I haven't tried landing the Global Flyer
yet, and was wondering how well they work.

Ohh, they work very well. Just don't try to touchdown above 70 KTS. Fly the
final with around 90 KTS and deploy the chutes somewhere between 100 and 50
ft AGL. That worked fine with me.
