I am getting COD2 for Xmas, and was have ben looking into getting a new card. I have always bought Nvidia since the days of the Monsters. But ATI's are more aggreesively priced I think.

Anyways, I downloaded the demo, and it seemed to run fine at 1280x1024 for me here. How demanding is the demo compared to gameplay throughout the game?

I stilll run a AGP8x of course. I dont pay alot of games, just EA sports and COD2 for now. If this machine games me for another year I will probably get a PS3 next year for xmas.

If I get a card I wanted to for sure stay under 300 after tax and shipping, and 225 sounds better!

I already have a TV tuner in my system, but the AIW 800xt looked since for 290, or the 850xt for 280, or 850Pro for 250. After mt taxes here i Ohio for microcenter and Newegg.

the X850XT is your best buy at $280 for a nice card that will get you solid play for COD2.

Before I had my bad ass 7800GTX SLI setup, I had an X800XT. The X850XT is faster- but not by a whole lot. Getting to the point, COD2 didn't run all that great at 1280x1024. It only dropped below 30fps a few times throughout the game, but it never "blew me away" in terms of performance either. I didn't use FSAA or 8x Anistropic filtering either.

My suggestion would be to not get an x800 based card if you want good performance in just COD2. COD2 was designed around the 6800/7800 series and not ATI's cards. Save an extra $50 and get a nexgen card like the 7800GT or even a 6800 series. Here are some benches (note, everything's maximum like AA and Anistropic filtering, so frame rates won't be THAT low in real life)

As you can see, COD2 benefits greatly from nVidia based cards. And since this one of the only games you play- it would make sense to go w/ nVidia in this case. All sports games run great on both cards (generally speaking, sports games are not demanding).

The Demo runs great on my 5700U in DX7 mode, and 1fps in DX9.

How much better is this game in DX9 mode? I still get the excitment of playing the game in DX7 and looks impressive to me! Would DX9 blow me away?

Also, what mode is the XBOX360 running this game in?

LOL. DX7 is stone age compared to DX9. There's a big visual difference.

I cant see cod 2 being playable with dx7 since most new games wont setup unless dx9 is present

Well, it does play in "forced dx7 mode" but not too well i found out. I found out how to run fraps and its maxing out in the 30's and bogs down into the teen when there is action.

And, I founf out that madden2006 is much more playable at low details too, it will run over 60fps instead of around 30 with details.

So, I am gettting a new card for sure. MAking this my last AGP that will eventually turn this computer into the "E machine" in a year or so.

Right now I am looking at the ATI 850pro. I kow it has limitations on only 12 pipelines, which if I am good can open up the other 4.

What I DO like about the 850pro is the dual DVI outputs. Right now I run dual CRT's but would like my future office PC to run dual LCD's in Digital would be cool!

A lot of games have DX7 compatibility mode and it works great as far as frame rates are concerned. (even HL2 has a hidden DX7 mode). You just don't get the eye candy that you get with DX9.

Well ended up with a X850XT. I miss my nview toolbar that would throw the windows to the other screen whenever I wanted.
