The subject printer used to be switched on by the PC whenever I started
a print job. Now that I am on XP, the same printer stays switched off,
and I have to manually (what a chore!!) turn-it on.

Another newsgroup suggested that it is the printer driver...
unfortunately there does not seem to be any driver updates or HP help
around this topic.

Am I stuck with this or is there a fix?

If HP don't have an XP driver for that model you're stuck. And if they
don't, that will be nothing new. Any printer you buy from HP that runs
on XP, will suddenly not have a driver when the latest Windows comes
out. HP are appalling at supporting their hardware., which is why we
no longer buy their printers.

I do not know of any updated drivers, but you could just leave the printer on.
It automatically goes into a power saving mode and uses little more power than
in the "off" state. I have also seen suggestions that the DeskJet 840 (or was
it 845?) driver works, but do not know if it would give you any added
functionality.

MY 6110 will not go to power save and the two levels of customer service
have no practically solution.
