Hey guys, a fiend of mine is wanting to build his own rig. His price limit is 1200.00

This is what he is looking at right now.

MSI K8N Neo Platinum 4 (How is this MB? anything better?)
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Crucial 1024 PC3200 DDR ram
Chaintech Geforce 6600 GT AGP card (I need a PCI card...which one?)
west Dig 250GB 7200rpm SATA
NEC ND3540A
Audigy 2ZS sound card
Dell 2001FP monitor

Would this be a worthy build? I am very cautious of the AGP video card. Again his price tag is 1200.

So what would you build for him, that would be easily upgradable for the future?

thanks

Well does he NEED everything here or can he reuse a monitor?

Get this

Chaintech VNF4 Ultra-----$75
AMD A64 939 3200+-------$166
1GB Value RAM (corsair is best price usually) $75
7800GT-------$330
Enermax 400W PSU------$65
Cheap case-----$35
Seagate 250GB SATA drive----$99
NEC ND3540A.....what you had
Use onboard sound
TOTAL
~950

That leaves 250 for a monitor...if he can't reuse. If he can....yu can upgrade a couple partls slightly and still have money left over to send me for some pizza.

what is the best site to get these from.... Newegg?

he is definately going to buy a new monitor, and he wants to get a good sound card.

What kind of Ram exactly will work with this rig?

Also, on NewEgg, which 7800 card exactly are you talking about getting?

Use newegg.....if he has to buy a new monitor and SoundCard you will have to downgrade your 7800G to a 6800GS.

Get Corsair value ram 1Gb kit (512x2) it should be like $75-$80

with the 7800G you could have gotten the XFX, but you have to downgrde because you have budget of 1200, and wan a new monitor and Sound card....

Dont get a soundcard for more fps.....get it because you want slightly better sound. but know this SC and dell monitor is dropping your gpu from a 8(from 1-10) down to a 4.5(from 1-10) Maybe you can drop the Sound card and find a monitor for 250 and still be able to get th 7800GT

7800G is WELL worth the investment for serius gamer.....no joke, he dell 2005 is a grea monitor but i would ratrher have a beast machine and an alrightr monitor then beas monitor nd an alright machine.

Be careful, that 350W PS does NOT have dual 12v rails, so might not work for your components. This one is better, and is a great deal today at NewEgg: ENERMAX EG425P-VE SFMA 2.0 ATX12V 420W Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681... Or consider a combo case & PS from Antec. I have this one: Antec PERFORMANCE TX1088AMG Gray Steel Server Computer Case 480W Power Supply - Retail $139+shipping, though you can go cheaper.

Or he can keep that case and get this.....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104954 for save money, and end up with a better PSU....

You dont need dual 12V rails....I have an antec case, and i love it, but its beter to go with a better psu....i had to replace my psu in my antec case.
