My friend has a HDD that has failed on him. He desperately NEEDS the data on this disk. If anyone can provide ANY help on software or other data recovery programs, he'd greatly appreciate your help. The HDD is a:

Western Digital WDCaviar WD400JB-32ENAO 40Gb IDE HDD

Thanks.

What happened? Does the drive spin up?

Have you tried software data recovery tools? (Spinrite and others)

Many times, if the drive is visible in BIOS you can get the data off it, but we need details...

GetBackData is a program that worked for me. Unfortunately I do not remember the company name. Google it. The program cost about $80 but there is a trial that lets you see what it will recover. I tried five programs before this one. I need to recover over 60gb of data. Handle it like a charm, but it took time to run. Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure the drive spins because the OS detects it (Says the little icon in bottom right corner to 'Safely Remove Hardware') I don't know how it happened. After he had reformatted the drive, it still worked. Suddenly it just stopped responding and info on it cannot be retrieved.
