I have one Maxtor and one Samsung hard drive, both IDE. I want to boot from the Maxtor, so I set it to master and just unplugged the Samsung because I didnt need it. I installed windows on the Maxtor and all that good stuff. But now, the Maxtor will only boot up if the Samsung is plugged in, and I do not want the Samsung to have to be plugged in. It hangs right after it recognizes the RAM and Drives. And it recognizes the Maxtor as the master too.

What is going on? How can I fix this? Thanks ahead of time guys.

If you need any more information about my situation, feel free to ask.

You may still have a jumper problem. Firstly, totally remove the ribbon cable plug from the Samsung (and the power). Unscrew the Maxtor and carefully read the top of the drive for possible jumper positions. If there is a location for Single (not Slave), use this. If there is only M, CS, & S choose M. If the jumper is cross-plugged over two different letters (this position is used with some drives for Master with Slave present), this is wrong for your situation. Change it to M only (Master).

Make sure you are using the non-blue END of an 80 wire cable (red line toward power supply) plugged into the drive. Make sure the blue END is plugged into the Primary on the mobo (red line to #1 location).

All this being done properly, boot and go into your BIOS. Look for the page that has IDE Configuration (possibly in Advanced). You should see the Maxtor listed as Primary IDE Master with nothing showing for Slave. If this is so, and you still can't boot to your desktop, there is something wrong with your operating system setup.

Boot up with your XP CD and do a Boot Repair.

1. Check if Samsung is setup as slave and Maxtor is setup as a Master (not single) correctly.

2. You should have 2 IDE channels. Just plug Samsung to other IDE channel.

No need to torture WinXP or BIOS
