Hello
My current computer
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7N400-L
Ram: 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
Video Card: Radeon 7500 64mb
Hard Drive: SAMSUNG (80 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/133)
Upgrade
I have two options, the first is the cheap option, and that would be to purchase a 6600GT AGP, and maybe a extra 512mb of memory, and potentially overclock my CPU a bit. That would cost around $300NZD. (I never got around to getting a new GPU when I replaced mt system last time)
Replace
The alternative would be to upgrade the entire box. Although that would cost slightly less then $1200 (my limit). If I did decide to replace I would purchase.
MotherBoard: DFI NF4 SLI INFINITY
CPU: Athlon 64 3200+
Memory: Twinmos 512MBx2 dual channel
Connect3D X800GTO 256MB PCI Express*
PSU: Enermax 485w Noisetaker
Case: not important.
*I doubt the new unlockable cards have reached New Zealand, so I am fairly confident that I could unlock it.
What I plan to use it for... ummm and other general stuff
I was about to purchase the above system then I stopped and thought that the most resource hungry game I played in the last 6 months only required a 400mhz CPU and a 32mb video card. That made me wonder what would the expected preformance difference between the two options would be. I do plan on purchasing half life II and maybe a few other new-ish games within the new year. (If a game is playable I do not care much about the graphics details).
If I do not replace my system now I would replace it in the next year or 2.If I do upgrade now I suspect it would be more like 3-4 years before the next upgrade.
