I have tried for the first time to burn a CD-R via Plextor 716SA (SATA DVD-RW) and it just would do nothing. I used Nero, it would start the process and then freeze on some 5% writing the CD Lead-In, DVD-ROM buffer level would constantly be at 0% (empty), at looks as though no data was getting from HDD to the drive. Drive reads perfectly fine ... do you think it's a software setup prob? Hardware? Firmware?

Could be a couple things (some of which you listed). Here's what I would do in successive stteps.

I would first try and use some different media. Also make sure the burner isn't trying to burn faster than what the media is rated for.

Next I would try and use some different burning software. Try WinAMP, iTunes, or whatever. If they work OK then there's an issue w/ Nero.

Next I would see if there's a fireware update for the drive. If that doesn't fix things, I would have the drive replaced.
