Which would be better: 4x 512mb PC3200 -or- 2x 1 gb PC3200?

That depends. There's a few benchmarks out there that show 4x DIMMs are faster than 2x DIMMs in P4 systems. But not by a whole lot.

If you think you'll eventually upgrade to >1GB in the future, then get 2x DIMMs.

I'm running 4x 512MB modules. I would have gone for 2x 1GB modules if I could.

Reason being: Almost every dual channel motherboard must knock the command rate down to 2T for more than 2 modules. With 2 modules you can run at 1T.
