Browser election query

Hi All,

I have noticed the following entry within the event log of our PDC...

"The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer
HUMANRESOURCES that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on
transport NetBT_El90x1. The master browser is stopping or an election is
being forced. "

I've looked at the configuration of both machines and cannot see anything
obvious that might cause this. the m/c mentioned is configured as a
stand-alone server within the domain. I am not a specialist in NT
administration so this could well be a silly problem - apologies in advance
if so!!

Any ideas as to the cause of this problem and possible solutions would be
most appreciated.

cheers Rod.

Rod,

For information about the browser and elections, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/102878/EN-US/.

You could then set the browser settings (disabling it on systems that you do
not want to become master browsers) by setting the MaintainServerList and
IsDomainMaster parameters in the registry as described below:

Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, look under the following subkeys for
some common registry settings that relate to browsing:
.
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\LMannounce .
LMannounce parameter information: . Value is set to 1 (TRUE) to make Windows
NT browser visible to LAN Manager clients. This setting causes the Windows
NT browser to announce itself with a LAN Manager 2.x compatible server
announcement.

.
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster .
IsDomainMaster parameter information: . When set to 1, this parameter
provides a priority boost to increase its likely hood of winning a master
browser election. It does not allow the browse server to become the domain
master browser. This value is a boolean value and can be any of the
following: Yes/No, True/False, or 1/0.

. MaintainServerList: . When set to NO, the server is not a
browse server.
. When set to YES, the server becomes a browse server.
. When set to AUTO, the server becomes a browse master if
the master browser asks it do so.

This is from the browser election FAQ KB article

Hope this helps. Thanks.

I have seen this problem on Windows 2000 machines. I found that if
NetBIOS is enabled on both TCP/IP and IPX/SPX then this problem occurs
a lot. In Windows 2000, by unchecking the "NWLink NetBIOS" box in the
network control panel the problem goes away. I can't remember if there
is an equivalent checkbox in WinNT. Make sure NetBIOS is only enabled
on one network protocol.
