I am looking to build an proxy sever, and I am stuck with what CPU go to with. I've narrowed it down between an Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Core and an P4 3.0 HT.

Will an extra GHz for an proxy server make that much of a differance?

That's one hell of a proxy server you're building. LOL.

Seriously though, I don't think it's going to make a difference. Focus on the NIC you're going to use. I.E., what interface you plan to use (PCI-X, PCI-E, etc) Thoroughput is going to make the difference here. So you'll want to go w/ a high bandwidth NIC.

Are u using fiber? gigabit ethernet? those are the important questions.

We're just using 100 ethernet and a built in NIC on the motherboard, but if the NIC is really gonna make that much of a differance then then I could add a PCI card.

........ a PIII system is kinda enough for that..... if just using 100 and a build in NIC....
