It's a first for the titty doc.
I started installing Win Server 2k3 SP1 on my computer Friday night and installed my apps on Saturday and corrected the services errors this morning.
I spent about eight hours trying to get everything up and running.
It takes a lot longer to shut down and start up my computer but when it's running, apps load and respond a lot faster than on WinXP Pro.
Bonus there are fewer services running and taking up less system resources with Win Server 2k3 SP1 as compared to WinXP Pro SP2.
So far I'm satisfied with the install.
Now to start playing around with my apps: Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 SP1 and Office Pro 2003 SP2.
The installation is the same as XP. Once installed, configuration is different.
I had some trouble with drivers.
Used the configuration manager to control third party bloatware on startup.
I had a couple BSOD's because of driver issues but that's been fixed.
As for the performance configuration it wasn't a problem manually adjusting the hardware acceleration for display and sound and program priority.
Without the eye candy that comes with XP, application performance has to be doubled.
It's great and I think I'll learn a lot from this OS.
If you can, go in and do some counters on performane for a bench mark. That way, in a few months you can see if you're losing any performance over time.
Plenty of utilities are out there to custom tweak your applications. Definately check out Microsoft's Newgroups for select things you want to try, otherwise it's a lot of reading and skimming.
