Hi I'm building up a list of stuff to buy for my new computer and I'd love to save a bit of cash on the case and PSU by buying them together - is this particular one a bad idea?

I can always upgrade the PSU at a later date if it's a problem but will it be good enough for the time being to run this computer?

Mobo - Asus a8n 939
processor - amd 64 3700
gfx - nvidia 6800 gs 256 meg
ram - corsair 1gb value selec 2x 512 mb
dvd burner - Nec somethingorother

I can't speak to the quality of the case your URL points to.... the real questions are:

1). How often are you anticipating having to get into your case to muck around with installing / de-installing hardware?

2). Are the edges of the inside of the case all nicely ground so there are no sharp edges?

3). What's the airflow of the case like and how many additional fans can you add to the case?

I don't build systems with really "Off name" cases.... I predominantly use Antec and others.... they seem to be well built; have good flow through ventalaion; and I don't scuff up my hands and there's always room to route the cables cleanly.

It's just my 2 cent's... me... I wouldn't use it... but that's me...

I'm the opposite of wildman - I buy the cheapest case I can find (including using the old one wherever possible)... but the PSU however... its the most important part of a new system. If the PSU isn't up to the task the system is worthless.

The PSU included with that case " 400W SILENT POWER SUPPLY INCLUDED! (RRP£10.99) " I'm guessing RRP has some meaning like 'regular retail price'. I would never trust a 400w PSU that someone says has a retail price of $18 (roughly converted to USD from pounds). Especially since things are more expensive over there even after conversion...

It may power your system. It may even power the system for a few months. But when (not if, when) it does blow, it may take parts of your system with it.

I'm more with fishmahn on this although I agree with wildman's points. An AMD 64 system should have as stable a PSU as you can get. High efficiency also helps keep the electricity costs lower. Since cost is obviously important to you, I would go with a Sunbeam NUUO 550W PSU or a Hiper 480W PSU. Higher priced but better PSUs would be the Seasonic 500W or 600W PSUs or the OCZ Modstreams or the PC Power and Cooling PSUs however these are likely out of your price range. Go with the Sunbeam. High efficiency and very stable at a moderate price. Your system will appreciate it in the long run.

That PSU would work perfectly fine. Both 12V rails are rated at 18A and Fortron is a decent company. Since you aren't running an SLI setup, 450W is plenty of power.

and that FSP 450 will handle SLI 6800's, total system draw would only be around 375 watts max in SLI config.

examples:

A8N Sli
A8N-E
A8N-SLi Premium
A8N-Sli Delux
